Message from the President
Chantal C. Volel-Torres
Hospital for Special Surgery
Greetings HLNY Members! The HLNY leadership has been hard at work to take our professional organization to the next level. In order to simplify and focus our major endeavors, we changed the committee structure of HLNY this year. Our committees have been consolidated from 12 into four--program, membership, marketing and finance--with the committee chairs reporting up to a member of the executive board. With this new trim structure, we will improve the efficiencies of our many volunteers, streamline our functions and develop succession planning for future HLNY leaders.
In recent months the program committee has delivered spectacular events with
renowned speakers. Check out in this newsletter that committee's report for a review of their past successes. We plan to sustain this level of activity with more top-notch
programs such as our 2011 kickoff event, Cocktails with the Chief, on January 19.
Also, our marketing committee recently unveiled a wonderful new website, as well as this newly designed e-newsletter, both of which makes me very proud to be an HLNY member.
This past September marked my 13th year with ACHE and 10th with HLNY/MHAA. These have been rewarding years to me both professionally and personally. I've learned to be a better healthcare leader and I have met many wonderful individuals who have become both colleagues and friends.
During Thanksgiving, I thought of all the selfless members of HLNY who volunteer their time and energies. I thank each and every one of you for your commitment and dedication, as you are the driving force behind HLNY. If you are interested in
volunteering, please reach out to our membership committee and they will happily discuss opportunities.
As 2011 nears, resolve to improve your professional development by attending more of our programs and becoming more active. I wish you and yours a very happy and healthy holiday season and I hope that when you look back at your membership with
HLNY, you do so with satisfaction and fulfillment.

Message from the ACHE Regent

MaryAnn Brown, FACHE

As the holiday season approaches, I respectfully take this opportunity to remind you to focus on your personal and your professional priorities. You should be mindful of 'self' during this busy yet sometimes stressful holiday time. It is common to feel the tug of personal versus professional responsibilities most strongly during the holidays. I would like to propose that you acknowledge the importance of both and not sacrifice one priority for the other.
I recommend including 'you' on your holiday gift list. Consider giving a gift that you will remember and use often even after the holiday season is gone. Plan to take advantage of all ACHE has to offer. Make the commitment now to attend ACHE's Congress on Healthcare Leadership in March. Also, set a personal goal around learning a new skill set, broadening your professional network and having fun in the process. The combination of ACHE and HLNY is ideal to accomplish these goals. Stay connected to professional colleagues and get involved in your local
chapter. HLNY provides so many great local opportunities.
You and your loved ones are your most important priorities and always keep this in focus on a daily basis, not just during the holidays.
I look forward to seeing you at the next HLNY program meeting AND at the Congress in Chicago. Thank you for your commitment to the healthcare profession and to your colleagues in ACHE. Together, we are stronger and smarter than we are individually. Best wishes for 2011.

Continuum Health Partner's Gail F. Donovan Honored at HLNY's 2010 Annual Gala
On June 16, at HLNY's Annual Gala, Gail F. Donovan, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Continuum Health Partners, was named Healthcare Executive of the Year.
"In my early career, the Metropolitan Healthcare Administrators Association (MHAA), from which HLNY evolved, provided a window into a bigger world," says Ms. Donovan. "Hospitals and health systems are complex places. HLNY gives its members understanding of where they fit into our industry."
Ms. Donovan applauds the work of HLNY's past and current leadership. "Talented people have nurtured this organization and have grown up professionally through their relationship with it," she says. "This honor allowed me to reflect on our connec- tions to each other. Of all the professional organizations I am and have been involved in, I have the deepest roots to and a special affinity for HLNY."
Ms. Donovan oversees the operations and corporate services for Continuum Health Partners, which includes Beth Israel Medical Center, St. Luke's and Roosevelt Hospitals, Long Island College Hospital, and The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.

Our events calendar is packed with Category I credit programs that will help members attain the FACHE credential. This year, we are also exploring collaborations, such as with the Public Health Association of New York City (PHANYC), to expand our program offerings and to bridge the gap with other professionals involved in New York healthcare.
Let's review our successful past programs (for an actual look, check out the photo gallery on our website). Our first educational program of the year was hosted by Lenox Hill Hospital on September 21. More than 150 HLNY members and guests attended the Category II credit event that featured Mark Solazzo, Executive Vice President & Chief Executive Officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. He gave a vibrant presentation on the ever-contracting and ever-expanding New York healthcare delivery system.
On October 21, close to 140 attendees arrived in Great Neck at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research to listen to a Category I panel discussion on the future of healthcare financing from the managed care perspective. The panel was moderated by Paul F. Maguire, Immediate Past President of HLNY (MediSys Health Network), and featured: Pat Wang, President & CEO, HealthFirst; Mark Lang, President & CEO, Fidelis Care; and Howard Gold, Senior Vice President of Managed Care & Business Development, North Shore-LIJ Health System.
Category I credit was again available from our November 18 panel discussion, "Sustaining a Financially Vibrant Healthcare Organization," moderated by Maureen Doran, HLNY President-Elect (VHA Empire-Metro). We were again graciously hosted at Lenox Hill Hospital; thanks goes to their food services vendor, Sodexo. More than 100 people came out to listen to advice and tales from the trenches as described by and shown here (left to right) with (far right) Chantal C.Volel-Torres,
HLNY President (Hospital for Special Surgery), and Ms. Doran: Simon Gisby, Managing Director, Deloitte Corporate Finance; Joseph J. Guarracino, SVP & CFO, The Brooklyn Hospital Center;
and David Rock, Managing Partner, Carl Marks Healthcare Partners.
This month saw two special events: On December 2, "Health Reform: The Battles Ahead in Albany and Washington," a co-sponsored event with PHANYC at LIU- Brooklyn Campus, and on December 9, an ACHE/HLNY one-day workshop at NYU Langone Medical Center to review for the Board of Governor's Exam.
Save the dates and buy tickets as soon as they are available (they sell out quickly!) for these upcoming events:
Look for program announcements from EventBrite, our new event management
software, and visit our website for details and to register.

HLNY membership increased by 9.25% last year! Keep spreading the good word and help us become the largest official chapter of ACHE. Speak with non-members at our events; they can be identified by a yellow highlight around the HLNY logo on their name badge.
And, Refer a Friend. Through our new program, invite friends and colleagues who are not ACHE members to attend one HLNY event FREE of charge. Instruct guests to use code 429-CFA when registering. Get 15+ friends to attend an event and join ACHE, and you will win a $200 gift certificate to The Apple Store. Another $200 Apple gift certificate will go to the person who refers the most friends, but doesn't make the 15+ threshold.
Ongoing membership committee initiatives are:
| |
Ambassador Program: Each new member will receive an "ambassador" who will welcome him or her to HLNY. |
| |
Program Hosting: Committee members will attend all programs to meet and greet participants. If you are interested in helping with this, contact Judith Lilavois at Jlilavoi@nyp.org. |
| |
Corporate Sponsorship: We are currently working with the board of directors to establish gold, silver and bronze level sponsorships. |
To continue receiving regular HLNY communications, you must renew or join ACHE by January 31, 2011.

Marketing has been hard at work making sure we effectively get the word out about
our upcoming distinguished program events. Our challenge: Communicating to our
diverse membership, from seasoned executives to early careerists. We've recently
launched two major communication vehicles to help us reach you.
Our new website launched in late September. On this site, you'll find a directory of
members, photo galleries from program events, access to on-line registration for
upcoming events, as well as ways in which you can become involved in advancing
your membership within HLNY.
And, as you can see, this is the premier issue of our new e-newsletter! We hope you
like the format and that it adds value to your membership.
If you haven't already joined our LinkedIn group or Facebook group, what are you
waiting for?! Enjoy these business and social media networking sites where you'll be
able to connect with other HLNY members and discuss current healthcare topics
of interest.
