For our last Black History Month spotlight, Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY) is delighted to recognize Avery Smith, MBA as he states “There are several changes I would like to see in the next 5-10 years regarding equity in the healthcare field. Firstly, a reduction and/or elimination of the healthcare disparities that exist. Addressing higher rates of chronic conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease through improved preventive care, early diagnosis, and management. Expanding access to affordable care, ensuring Medicaid expansion in all states, particularly in the South, to cover low-income individuals. Making medications more affordable, especially for chronic conditions affecting African Americans. An increase in the number of African American healthcare professionals to build trust and enhance patient outcomes. Improvement in addressing social determinants of health. Investing in community centers and underserved communities for better access to healthy food, safe housing, water and preventative education. Increasing mental health services and combating stigma, particularly given the impact of systemic racism. Implementing policy and systemic reforms. Allocating more resources to research conditions disproportionately affecting African Americans and ensuring their inclusion in clinical trials for effective treatments. Advocating for living wages, job security, and access to employer-sponsored health insurance to address economic disparities impacting health. Protecting voting rights to ensure African Americans can elect officials prioritizing healthcare equity and supporting organizations fighting for social justice and the expansion of telehealth services in rural and underserved areas and providing resources to help communities navigate health tools.”
Thank you Avery for your insights and dedication to uplifting others to positively impact the field of healthcare!
