Panel Discussion: Career Positioning

This panel will focus on the nuts and bolts of career planning. It will explore steps an individual should take within his or her organization and in the surrounding community to reach the next level in his or her career. The program will begin with brief opening remarks of approximately 10 minutes by the moderator, followed by 15-minute presentations by each of the three panelists. The program will conclude with a 30-minute question- and-answer period.

Arthur Gianelli
President of Mount Sinai St. Luke’s

Arthur Gianelli is President of Mount Sinai St. Luke’s, one of seven hospitals that comprise the Mount Sinai Health System located in New York City, New York. Mr. Gianelli is also President of the Mount Sinai Performing Provider System. Mr. Gianelli is a Special Advisor to the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Mount Sinai Health System for Medicaid Strategy. Mr. Gianelli has been with the Mount Sinai Health System since February of 2014. Mr. Gianelli currently serves on the Board of Directors of Island Harvest, the Citizens Budget Commission of New York, Health Leads, HealthIx, the Healthcare Leaders of New York, the Mount Sinai Health Partners IPA, and the Greater New York Hospital Association.

Carol Gomes, MS, FACHE, CPHQ, MASCP, T(ASCP)HTL,DLM

Chief Operating Officer and Chief Quality Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital

Carol is a member of the senior executive team, serving as the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Quality Officer at Stony Brook University Hospital.  Formerly, she was the Associate Director for Quality Management with administrative oversight for the departments of Continuous Quality Improvement, Decision Support Services, Clinical Pathways and Management Engineering. She was also the Associate Director for Neurosciences.

She earned two Master’s degrees from Stony Brook University in Management and Policy from the Harriman School for Management and Policy and Healthcare Management and Administration from the School of Allied Health Professions.  She has served on the Malcolm Baldrige Quality Program’s Board of Examiners since 1999, most recently as a Senior Examiner and Alumni Examiner.  She teaches for the School of Health Technology and Management. She holds certifications as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, Certified Practitioner of Healthcare from the National Association for Healthcare Quality and numerous certifications in laboratory sciences and management from the American Society for Clinical Pathology.  

She is the recipient of numerous leadership awards including the Long Island Business News Healthcare Heroes Award in Achievements in Healthcare, the Master Award and the Excellence in Management Award from the American Society of Clinical Pathology, and The Distinguished Alumna Award from Stony Brook University.  She has served on the Stony Brook University Alumni Association Board, holding all of the executive level positions, including President.  She currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Vizient Senior Operations Officer Network Steering Committee and serves as a board members on numerous boards associated with healthcare activities.

She actively volunteers to serve as a mentor for students pursuing healthcare administration and participates regularly as a panelist for the Future Healthcare Leaders “See You at the “C” Suite” seminars.  Carol regularly participates at Alumni and Student Career Networking events to assist young careerists with job opportunities and career guidance.  She and her husband Lyle have donated $30,000 to create a scholarship for Stony Brook University students pursuing a healthcare career. She has worked in the healthcare field for over 30 years.


Leonard Achan, RN, MA, ANP
Chief Innovation Officer of Hospital for Special Surgery 

Leonard Achan, RN, MA, ANP, is a healthcare executive, entrepreneur and artist. He is currently the Chief Innovation Officer of Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS), the world’s leading institution for musculoskeletal health. Mr. Achan has over 18 years of executive healthcare leadership experience in a variety of roles spanning clinical, operational, digital, strategic communications, branding and business development. Prior to joining HSS, he served as Senior Associate Dean for Global Communications, Branding and Reputation at the Icahn School of Medicine while concurrently serving as Chief Communications and Access Officer at Mount Sinai Health System in New York City. Mr. Achan is also co-founder and Chairman of Quality Reviews, Inc. RateMyHospital.com http://ratemyhospital.com/  and serves on boards of private and nonprofit organizations, most recently being appointed to the Board of Trustees of Adelphi University in Garden City, NY. He is also a contributor to Forbes and Huffington Post.

Leonard Achan holds a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Adelphi University, a Master’s and Nurse Practitioner degree from New York University, Post Master’s certification in Administration from Villanova University and he is also an alumni and Fellow of The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Achan shares his wealth of knowledge locally and abroad as a lecturer and has taught at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business as well as internationally, at the City University of Hong Kong, The University of Macau, the University of San Carlos and was recently made an Honorary Senior Naval Professor in the Philippines. In his private life, he is a contemporary artist, is married with two children and resides in Nassau County, NY.


Paige Dworak, MBA, FACHE
Chief Executive Officer of Prospect East Orange General Hospital

Paige Dworak is the Chief Executive Officer of East Orange General Hospital, one of 20 hospitals that are a part of the for-profit system, Prospect Medical, headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. As Chief Executive Officer, she has ultimate responsibility for running the hospital, setting strategic direction, and executing on the corporate vision. In previous roles with Prospect, she has worked at Waterbury Hospital, Eastern Connecticut Health Network, and CharterCare Health Partners.

Ms. Dworak has nearly 20 years of experience in hospital operations and financial management. Prior to joining Prospect, she has worked in leadership roles at the Cleveland Clinic, Trinity Health, The Brooklyn Hospital Center, and has held consulting roles focused on financial and operational improvement.

Ms. Dworak is board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and serves as Immediate Past President of the NY Chapter, the Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY.) She serves on the Board of Directors and Finance Committee for Lott Assisted Living Residence, and Lott Community Home Health Care. She earned her Master Degree in Business Administration (MBA) at Montclair State University, her Bachelors from William Paterson University, and is Six Sigma Green Belt Certified.
