In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, we asked our Healthcare Leaders of New York (HLNY) member Jeena Velzen:
How can healthcare systems better support the professional growth and leadership advancement of AAPI individuals across all roles and levels?
✨ Jeena Velzen shared: “Healthcare systems must actively support AANHPI professionals by addressing bias, fostering inclusion, and expanding leadership opportunities. The rise in anti-Asian discrimination since the pandemic highlights the urgent need for culturally responsive mental health support and safe, respectful workplaces. The “model minority” myth continues to reinforce the “bamboo ceiling,” limiting advancement and access to mentorship and sponsorship. Allyship is essential—especially from those outside the AANHPI community. As a transracially adopted Korean American, I’ve often found myself both within the community and on its margins. That perspective has shown me how crucial it is to seek deeper cultural understanding and to challenge limiting narratives. Only through intentional effort can we build truly inclusive and equitable environments for all.”
Jeena’s perspective serves as a reminder that fostering equity in healthcare takes more than policy—it requires active listening, inclusive leadership, and a commitment to challenging systemic barriers.
Thank you Jeena for all you do to champion inclusivity!
